The stages of healing

Mindfulness, Mind, Body, Soul Wellness & Healing | Counsellor & Mental Health and Wellbeing Coach in Newcastle Australia

Healing is not a linear path. You will have great days, and then you will have dark days.

Stage 1: Awareness

The first stage in healing is by becoming aware. Aware of your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, habits, patterns and stories.

Stage 2: Acceptance

The second stage in healing is acknowledging and accepting those thoughts, emotions, behaviours, habits, patterns and stories. This stage is not about encouraging them. It is about having the ability to acknowledge your current reality.

Stage 3: Understanding

The third stage is understanding the underlying root causes. This is when you will explore your past experiences, thoughts, emotions, behaviours, habits, patterns and stories.

Stage 4: Coping and Management

The fourth stage is finding coping strategies that work for you. This is when you will learn healthy ways of expressing emotions and how you can release any of the unhelpful parts contributing to your current reality.

Stage 5: Growth and Transformation

The fifth stage is when you will likely feel as though you have gone through a period of growth. This could be by developing greater self-awareness, resilience, compassion (for others and yourself) and a deeper sense of purpose.

Stage 6: Integration and Maintenance

The sixth stage is all about integrating everything you’ve learned into your day-to-day life. This could be finding sustainable habits and routines that support you, maintaining supportive relationships, continuing therapy or coaching and self-awareness work.

Stage 7: Resilience

The seventh stage is where you may relapse and fall into old thoughts, emotions, behaviours, habits, patterns and stories, however you then be able to show resilience in bouncing back from the bump in the road by seeking support if you had stopped, practising a lot of self-compassion and self-love.

I would like to acknowledge the Awabakal people that are the Traditional Custodians of this land. I would also like to pay my respects to the Elders both past and present and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who are present here today.
