this is why your child’s behaviour feels bigger than it should

There are moments in parenting that really catch you… your child does something small, something developmentally normal and suddenly your reaction feels bigger than the situation. You feel irritated, overwhelmed, maybe even angry and it can be confusing when you know it’s not really about what’s happening in front of you.

Sometimes what you’re seeing in your child is a reflection of parts of you that never felt safe to exist.

Big emotions that weren’t allowed. Needs that weren’t met. Behaviours that were shut down or punished. Sounds that were silenced. When those same things show up in your child, it can bring up discomfort because your body remembers what that felt like.

This has nothing to do with your ability to parent and it definitely doesn’t make you a bad parent. It makes you an aware one.

These moments are not just about correcting your child, they are invitations to understand yourself. To notice what is being activated and where it might be coming from.

You might not get it right every time. You might still react, still feel overwhelmed, still need space. But the work is in recognising it, taking responsibility and coming back to repair.

Parenting has a way of bringing your own childhood to the surface and while that can be confronting, it’s also an opportunity to respond differently, both for your child and for yourself.
