emotional repair in parenting

We often think repair in parenting needs to be a big, huge conversation but a lot of the time it can happen in real time.

It can look like noticing your tone and simply saying “I’m sorry for my tone” in the moment. It can look like pausing when your child’s face changes and realising they felt hurt or scared. It can look like taking a breath and telling your child “I’m feeling frustrated, but I don’t want to speak to you like that.”

I also want to clear up something a lot of parents think… repair does not mean there are no boundaries. It doesn’t mean your child gets whatever they want or that you pretend the behaviour was okay. It means you take responsibility for your part while still holding the bounday.

That might sound like “I shouldn’t have yelled. I’m sorry. It’s still not okay to throw things but I can say that without shouting.”

Children don’t need perfect parents. They need parents who can come back, own their reactions and show them what accountability actually looks like (and dare I say… the world needs more of that).

When we repair in real time, we teach our children that conflict doesn’t have to mean disconnection. We teach them that big feelings can be worked through. And we teach them there is still love through hard moments.

You won’t get it right every time. I definitely don’t. None of us do. But every repair is a chance to build safety again.
