do not confuse what is common with what is normal.

Newcastle Australian Holistic Counsellor & Wellbeing Coach

Just because something is common does not mean it is normal.

Feeling exhausted all the time. Living in a constant state of stress. Struggling to relax, even when nothing is wrong. Flinching at sudden sounds. Shutting down when conflict arises. Feeling numb when you should feel joy.

These things are common, especially for those who have experienced trauma. But they are not normal. Not in the sense that they are meant to be the way we live. They are the body’s response to what it has endured. They are signs of a nervous system that has learned to protect itself, to stay on guard, to survive at all costs.

When trauma happens, especially in childhood, our bodies don’t just move on. They adapt. They hold the tension, the fear, the memories, sometimes so deeply that we don’t even realise we are still living in the past. We think it’s just who we are, "I’ve always been anxious," "I just don’t handle stress well," "I’m not a very affectionate person."

But often, it’s not who we are, it’s how we learned to be.

Hypervigilance. Emotional shutdown. Chronic fatigue. Digestive issues. Overwhelm at the smallest triggers. These are not personality traits. These are survival mechanisms.

But here’s what’s important to know… your body is not broken. It’s protecting you in the only way it knows how. And just as it has learned to live in survival, it can learn to feel safe again.

Healing is not just about changing your thoughts. It’s about working with your body, learning how to calm your nervous system, how to release stored trauma, how to feel safe in your own skin.

This is what we work through in my 1:1 counselling and coaching sessions. We don’t just talk about the pain, you learn how to process it, how to regulate your nervous system, how to move forward without carrying the weight of the past. You don’t have to stay in survival mode. Healing is possible. And I’m here to walk that path with you.
